Tenille Townes Shares Story Behind 'Somebody's Daughter'

Tenille Townes grew up in Grande Prairie, Alberta, and released her debut single "Somebody's Daughter" on Columbia Nashville in late 2018. We sat down with her to get to know her a little better and find out the story behind her debut single.

Growing up in Canada, she says that country music was deeply rooted there. Her grandparents bought her, her first guitar at age 14. That led to her falling in love with the idea of being able to tell a story with music. That moment is when everything clicked for her, and she realized that's what she wanted to do.

The process of songwriting has become one of her favorite parts about the journey that she's on, saying how much she loves being a vessel for ideas. She went on to tell us that being in the creative songwriting community of Nashville and being surrounded by that spirit all the time was something she loved.

The idea for her debut single "Somebody's Daughter" was sparked during a car ride that she had with her mom while they were furniture shopping. When they took an exit off the interstate, they saw a young girl standing there holding onto a cardboard sign. That moment pulled at something in them and they had a talk that day she would never forget. Realizing how everyone has a story and wondering what happened in her story that let up to that moment. Tenille says the girls face stuck with her, and she wanted to bring that moment into a writing room.
